What’s billed as the world’s longest and toughest snowmobile endurance race is scheduled to kick off Sunday in Labrador West.
Although warmer weather and potential lack of snow could have the final say.
Thirty-two teams have signed up for this year’s Cain’s Quest challenge, with the start set for Tanya Lake in Labrador City at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
The teams, consisting of a driver and a navigator, have to find their way around the Labrador wilderness, stopping at 15 checkpoints and laying over in five communities for rest stops.
Cain’s Quest chair Chris Lacey admits it’s tough, but says the racers are well aware of the challenges.
Each of the teams are recommended to have their own personal insurance and must sign a waiver to participate.
Lacey says “they understand the risk but with the conditions you’re going to have, the speeds are going to be a lot slower, so the risk of a major incident is probable, but less than before.”
The race concludes a week from Sunday with an awards ceremony at the Arts and Culture Centre.
