The weather in Labrador is going to turn cold today, just the way they like it for the longest snowmobile race in the world.
The engines rev up at 10:00 this morning at Tanya Lake in Labrador City for Cain’s Quest.
Travelling in pairs, 32 teams have signed up for the challenge. Racers will stop at checkpoints and required rest layovers in five communities throughout Labrador before returning to the finish line on Tanya Lake.
Meteorologist Robert Grove of the Gander Weather Office says the day will start off with southwesterly winds but then everything turns cold as the winds switch to westerly.
It will be cold in Labrador West and that will be spready throughout Labrador. It may be near zero for little while tonight but then it turns cold through all of Labrador for pretty much the first half of the week.
Weather was an issue last year when the race was abruptly cancelled because of unseasonably warm temperatures and ice melt.
The provincial government gave Cain’s Quest about $115,000 to stage this year’s event, which brings in a lot of spinoff economic activity.
The crews can be tracked online.
