The president of the province’s teachers association has “no faith” in the provincial budget.
Trent Langdon says the budget offers very little in terms of addressing staff shortages in the K-12 system. While there will be an increase in the number of full-time teaching positions, he says that doesn’t address their concerns.
“We’re not pleased with this budget at all,” he says. The increase in full-time positions, says Langdon, is to address the growing population and increase in newcomers and does not address recruitment and retention.
Government has set aside $41-million towards the building of new schools, which Langdon welcomes, but says they’re currently unable to meet the needs of the students.
“Right now we have a crisis in terms of the delivery of services, and that is the issue right now in that we’re unable to meet the needs of all children.”
