RCMP have laid impaired driving charges in connection with a highway crash that killed two young women six months ago.
The victims, both 22 years old, died after the car they were driving was struck head-on by an SUV near Arnold’s Cove on January 21st.
Police initially stated that the driver of the SUV “showed signs of impairment” after he was rescued from his burning vehicle.
They later said they had received the results of blood samples from the driver, but that further analysis was required.
This morning, RCMP announced that the driver, 71-year-old Austin Deir of Mount Pearl, has now been charged with four counts — two of impaired driving causing death, and two of dangerous driving causing death.
Police have not said what type of impairment might be involved, but noted it could be alcohol, a drug, or a combination of both.
Deir was formally charged on Thursday.
His first court date is set for September 26th in Clarenville.
