Used oil and glycol products are getting a second life here in the province, as a new recycling program officially launched today.
The Atlantic Used Oil Management Association (UOMA) launched the recycling program at Steele Honda, which has brand owners take responsibility for their products so they are diverted from landfills.
Registered collectors with UOMA Atlantic will collect used oil and antifreeze; used oil filters; used oil/antifreeze containers 50L or less; and empty lubricant and brake cleaner aerosol cans from large waste generators—like garages, car dealerships and harbour authorities.
An important aspect is building a network of Collection Facilities to ensure all residents have a place to bring their used oil and antifreeze products.
UOMA started rolling out the program across the province this summer visiting over 400 garages and car dealerships to introduce the program. Over 100 businesses have signed up to act as collection facilities so far.
Environment Minister, Derrick Bragg says the program will help achieve the province’s goal of 50 per cent waste diversion.
