Rennie’s River in St. John’s will be full of bright yellow rubber ducks in early October for the 36th annual Rennie’s River Duck Race.
This year Quidi Vidi Brewing is joining the race as a title sponsor.
For the last three decades, rubber ducks are released into the river as one of the Fluvarium’s biggest and most popular fundraising events.
Executive Director at the Fluvarium, Shantille Butler said they’re excited this year to have Quidi Vidi Brewing on board.
First prize is $2,500, second prize is $1,000, and the third prize is $500 this year.
Justin Fong of Quidi Vidi Brewing says the duck race is a legacy event that they’re more than happy to sponsor. He’s also signed on for necessary volunteer work both before, and after, the race.
He laughs that they had a couple of staff, including himself, “up to our necks in water in the river, including myself jumping ducks to shoot some funny videos…” but his time in the river doesn’t end there. A group of volunteers will be getting back into the water after the race to retrieve ducks that got caught along the banks. “So I’ll be up to my neck, picking ducks out of the water after that.”
The race gets underway at noon on Sunday, October 6. Tickets are available at the Fluvarium website or at the Fluvarium or Quidi Vidi Brewery.
