Hanukkah, the 8-day Festival of lights, began on Christmas Day and wraps up January 2 with a public tree lighting in St. John’s sandwiched in between.
Celebrating Hanukkah is a potent point of light, Jewish pride and confidence for Canadian Jews in the fight against darkness and antisemitism, says Rabbi Chernitsky.
He says this Hanukkah, St. John’s is seeing a surge in public displays of the holiday and Jewish identity, with many more families and individuals planning to light their menorahs in visible places, such as their doors or windows.
Chabad of Newfoundland will light a public 8-foot Menorah erected in the Viking Building parking lot this Sunday at 4:00.
