A legendary St. John’s hockey player and community builder who skated in the old World Hockey Association has passed away.
Brian Gibbons, a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame, died Tuesday at the age of 77.
A stalwart defenceman, Gibbons’ hockey career began in St. John’s in 1953. He played in the Ontario Hockey League in the mid-60s, which led to him signing with the Detroit Red Wings in 1968.
He played across North America, competing alongside legends like Gordie Howe as a member of the WHA’s Springfield Kings, tallying 15 goals and 88 assists in 226 games.
Gibbons returned to the province in 1975, leading the St. John’s Capitals to a Herder Trophy a year later.
After retiring from competitive hockey, he became the face and voice for Labatt Brewery’s sales and marketing team, forming lifelong friendships and making lasting contributions to the business and sporting communities.
A wake is set for Friday at Caul’s on Lemarchant Road, with the funeral service at Caul’s Chapel Saturday morning.
