The Straits Minor Hockey Association of St. Barbe on the Northern Peninsula is in the running to win nearly $100,000 to go towards making hockey accessible for more families.
The association has already been named the finalist for the Kruger Big Assist in the Atlantic region – nabbing them $25,000 toward their organization.
Now, voting is open across the country to select a national winner – with which comes an additional $75,000.
Emma Hynes, treasurer with the association, says they have 127 kids registered with them, some of whom are also registered with their girls’ program.
Hynes says it will help them reach more keeps, noting they try to keep costs as low as possible for their families. As an example, she says earlier this year they bought some new goalie gear so kids could try that position, and it resulting in them getting four new goalies.
