Some 2,000 municipalities of all sizes are meeting in Ottawa this weekend under the theme “Stronger, Together: Local Strength, National Prosperity.”
Local government is the level that directly impacts most people on a day-to-day basis, as it provides services such as snow clearing, garbage collection, street lighting, and recreation.
Amy Coady, President of Municipalities NL, says they would like a share of the tax money they help create. She notes it would not result in any tax increase since the money is already there.
She says a one percent share of the HST would make a big difference to the bottom line of municipalities and would allow them to do the work that they have to do.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government has no immediate plans to overhaul municipal funding.
