A thirteen-year-old boy in the Goulds is about to have the most important haircut of his life as he completes a special fundraiser in memory of a friend.
AJ Billard has been growing out his hair since the pandemic. It now reaches down to about the middle of his back.
Earlier this month he began a “Shave to Play” fundraiser, with him committing to chopping off his locks if a $5,000 goal could be reached.
The funds will go towards building a playground in memory of AJ’s kindergarten and grade 1 classmate Curtis Hudson, who passed away from brain cancer in 2017 at the age of 6.
AJ’s mom, Allison Billard, says May was “quite a month” with a lot of donations coming in, including a $2,500 matching donation from Goulds PharmaChoice. She reveals that they have well surpassed their goal, with over $8,000 being raised so far.
AJ says reaching the finish line of the fundraiser is exciting and he is very proud to have come this far.
