A Cape Breton-based aviation management company is expressing interest in collaborating with its partners, the town of Stephenville, and the provincial government in exploring the future of the Stephenville Dymond International Airport.
Celtic Air Services already operates the Allan J. MacEachen Regional Airport in Port Hastings, Nova Scotia, and says it “sees tremendous potential in Stephenville’s location, facilities and history.”
CEO Dave Morgan says they’ve been watching the news surrounding the Stephenville facility which was recently downgraded to an aerodrome, and they’ve reached out to the local town council to see what opportunities might be available.
He sees the facility’s status as an aerodrome not as a difficulty, but as an opportunity.
“An aerodrome is an airport that can’t host scheduled services” and their plans wouldn’t involve scheduled services in the short-term. Right now, they’d be interested in restoring services to allow medevacs and private jet traffic with the hopes of attracting scheduled carriers back to Stephenville in the long-term.
Town of Stephenville welcomes the interest
The Stephenville Town council says it’s pleased with Celtic Air Services’ interest in the beleaguered airport property.
Mayor Tom Rose calls Celtic Air Services’ interest “welcome news for the town.”
