A 34-year-old man is dead as the result of a collision on the Trans Canada that forced a lengthy shut down of the highway yesterday.

Police and emergency crews were called to the scene between Gander and Benton around 2:30 yesterday morning.

RCMP say a vehicle heading westbound collided with an eastbound tractor trailer.

The driver of the vehicle died at the scene, while the truck driver suffered minor injuries.

The highway reopened yesterday afternoon.

The investigation continues and the Chief Medical Examiner is involved.
