Oceana Canada is keeping a close eye on the decisions Ottawa makes in its northern cod and capelin management plans.
Oceana Canada research scientist Jack Daly says neither stock is in good shape, and they’re looking for a balanced and cautious approach.
“We’re talking about stocks that are in the cautious and critical zones,” says Daly. “We have a lot of calls out there for really rapid increases in how much fish we take out, and what we’re really looking for is a balanced, long-term approach to see quota decisions that are not only good for the people this year, but are ultimately good for communities in the coming years.”
