The province is providing the Nunatsiavut government with $3-million for a project that will supply coastal communities in northern Labrador with renewable energy.
The “microgrid” project in Nain will consist of two wind turbines, a battery energy storage system, and a microgrid controller with the capacity to produce up to three megawatts of renewable energy.
Government says the project will provide a sustainable and renewable energy source for the coastal communities of Nunatsiavut.
It’s expected to displace between 1.3 and 1.6 million litres of fuel annually, and will reduce transportation risks, home heating challenges, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The money was announced as part of a larger $3.8-million being split among five different entities for various initiatives.
The funding is broken down among a number of governments and organizations.
