A lobster fisherman on Bell Island went out fishing on Saturday but returned with what’s described as a military artillery shell.
After jumping off the boat into the shallow water, Stewart Saunders brought the shell aboard and then transported it in his truck. In his curiosity, he even tried using a knife to get a better look at it.
It was later discovered that the shell was live, leading to parts of Bell Island being closed over the weekend while crews worked to determine the next steps.
His wife, Tara, recalled the moment she first heard that her husband had found the shell.
“He said, ‘bring me down some dry clothes. I jumped over the boat and picked up a missile.’ I said, ‘you fool,'” she relayed to VOCM News.
“So I bring him his clothes down to the skipper’s house and sure enough, on the tailgate of the truck is this missile. We were laughing and we were carrying on because he actually jumped into the ocean to actually retrieve this thing.”
His wife says It’s the first and last time that he does something like that, while Saunders jokingly says his next mission is to find a grenade.
