Members of Barrow AFC are in the province for the next few days touring the region with the support of Keyin College.
The UK soccer club, based in Barrow-in-Furness near Blackpool, spent the day touring the city and visiting young soccer players and students before heading to Gander, Marystown and Corner Brook.
Midfielder Isaac Fletcher says he’s hoping to teach young players the importance of having fun while playing soccer.
“Every day I go to work with a smile on my face. I know that I’m doing what I wanted to do when I grew up” says Fletcher.
“I think the main thing with the kids is to keep enjoying it, keep working hard, and try not to put any pressure on it. There can be a lot of pressure when you’re younger. But, just enjoy it.”
The team’s jerseys sport both the Newfoundland and Labrador government and the Keyin College logos, thanks to local partnership deals.
The $171,000 NL partnership arrangement, meant to raise the province’s profile in industrialized northern England in the hopes of attracting newcomers, drew political criticism last year.
