U.S. President Donald Trump has cut off trade talks with Canada, calling Ottawa’s digital services tax a “blatant attack” on the United States.
Trump made the comments in a post to his Truth Social platform, threatening to impose blanket tariffs on all Canadian products.
Trump accuses Canada of being “a very difficult” country to deal with.
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on trade with Canada, effective immediately” read the President’s post.
Prime Minister Mark Carney had given the two countries 30 days to reach a trade deal before Canada imposed its own counter tariffs on the U.S. However, with his July 21st deadline looming, Trump’s comments have thrown the entire process into question.
