Close to three quarters of the heavy fuel onboard the Baltic III, grounded near Lark Harbour since February, has been removed from the ship.
The Canadian Coast Guard provided the update a few days ago.
The heavy fuel on board must be warmed in order to be pumped from the vessel, making the process a long and labourious one.
Forty-three more cargo containers have been removed from the vessel, bringing the total number of containers removed to 172.
Water and shoreline surveys have resulted in the discovery of some tar stains and small tar balls in Cedar Cove and surrounding area.
Heating, pumping and transfer of heavy fuel is ongoing as weather conditions allow, with four of the ship’s six tanks now empty.
