The NDP is claiming that numerous political donations are costing taxpayers a substantial amount of money.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn points to nearly $400,000 in political donations from Newfoundland Power to the PC’s and Liberals as one of main drivers for an increase in electricity.
He says, if elected, his party will conduct a complete independent investigation into rising power rates.
Dinn also alleges that other parties are leveraging political donors to either promote or suppress policy changes.
“Government will often respond to with,’ we’ve got to check with our stakeholders’. Who are the stakeholders? I can tell you the people who are struggling are the stakeholders, but they don’t get listened to,” he told reporters outside Newfoundland Power’s building in St. John’s.
“So who are the stakeholders? I would say in many cases is going to be the corporations the large donors and so on and so forth the businesses and that was very clear in the CCPA report in that businesses have been very good in lobbying and keeping the minimum wage low.”
Dinn reiterated his $68-million commitment to cut HST on home heating bills at the announcement yesterday.
