The chair of the NL chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students says Memorial University’s focus right now should be advocating for more funding from the province, instead of making cuts.
Last week, MUN detailed an overall 4.6 per cent decline in enrollment compared to the previous year.
The federation says enrollment at the university has been steadily declining for four years, and are now at their lowest levels since 2001.
It says this year’s drop represents $6-million in lost revenue.
In recent months, MUN has implemented several changes to try to address financial shortfalls, but Chair Nicolas Keough does not believe they should be looking at cuts.
He says that would be the “worst case scenario” and the university should instead be looking at asking the province for more funding.
