Provincial officials are urging the public to get vaccinated against both the flu and COVID-19, following what was a busy cold and flu season last year.
The 2024-25 flu season saw a record number of flu cases in the province, and nearly 175 hospitalizations due to COVID-19.
Only three in ten people hospitalized for the flu last year had been vaccinated.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, noted that last year’s flu season saw a low number of vaccinations among young people.
“We as a population can ensure that it won’t be as bad as last year’s is if more people got vaccinated,” Fitzgerald told reporters.
“So while there was a 50 per cent rate in that 65-plus group for flu last year, only 23 per cent of the population on the whole got their vaccine. We really would like to see that number higher. We especially would love to see it higher in the youngest age group.”
Shots can be booked online or by contacting your local pharmacy.
