Flights in and out of Wabush have been suspended until further notice because of a lack of firefighting and crash rescue services.
It’s one of the busier airports in the province as it also serves mining-rich western Quebec just across the Labrador border.
MP Phil Earle became aware of the issue last night, taking calls from people who were worried about transportation for medical purposes.
He notes that people have to get to St. John’s or the Maritimes for medical reasons. As well, mining operations are labour intensive so a lot of that activity is affected.
PAL is the main carrier at Wabush but planes larger than 19 seats are not permitted to use the airport.
MP Earle says he is working on the situation in hopes of finding a resolution.
