Hurricane Melissa is heading toward the province after wreaking havoc through the Caribbean.
Chris Fogarty, a meteorologist with the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax says while Friday and Saturday are forecast to be wet and windy, current models show that Melissa will track closer to the Avalon than originally forecast.
He says that’s something they’ll be keeping a close eye on since the powerful storm isn’t expected to weaken dramatically as it churns northward.
“There’s some energy that the hurricane leftovers have been grabbing from the temperature contrasts in the atmosphere, so it’s kind of changing shape, becoming more like a mid-latitude weather system.” But, warns Fogarty, “it certainly looks like its intensity will stay high, so that’s why we have the Grand Banks on alert…they’ll need to watch this one closely.”
We continue to closely monitor major hurricane Melissa. The storm is expected to accelerate northeastward over the next day or so and pass southeast of Atlantic Canada Friday into Saturday. https://t.co/jd7adlVUDY pic.twitter.com/5FxK4meaDX
