South facing coastlines have been under assault this week with a series of storm surge warnings including one yesterday. The town of Placentia sandbagged some low-lying areas in preparation, but couldn’t stop the ocean’s relentless progress inland.
Mayor Jamie Neville says a new extension of the wharf in Jerseyside was underwater yesterday.
The water wall around the lower part of Placentia held up, but it is showing its age as it was constructed more than 30 years ago.
Mayor Neville says water levels are higher now than they used to be, and they will have to respond in terms of upgrading their flood protection infrastructure.
He says council put a rock wall barrier in place along the Lower Road in Dunville a few years ago, and in some places this morning, the water had flowed over the wall. Neville says the ballfield in Dunville is also inundated.
“The tides are getting higher, and this is exceptionally high this time…It is concerning.”
