A fundraiser is planned for this weekend to help raise money to support disaster relief in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa.
The storm struck the western portion of the Caribbean island as a Category 5 hurricane.
The President of the Jamaican Canadian Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Didan Wedderburn, says the news coming out of the region is not good.
“One third of the island is completely devastated,” says Wedderburn. “Entire communities, sometimes 90 to 95 per cent of all homes, have been flattened. People have been without water for days, some of them wearing the same clothes for more than a week. It is a situation that no-one could have ever imagined.”
Jamaicans who call Newfoundland and Labrador home are hosting a One Love Jamaica Hurricane Melissa Support Concert this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at First Point at 30 Harvey Road.
She says all proceeds will go to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management in Jamaica which is involved in disaster relief.
