The NunatuKavut Community Council has officially launched an advocacy campaign in response to Memorial University’s draft Indigenous Verification Policy.
The council says the policy, as currently written, would exclude NunatuKavut from being capable of being recognized as Indigenous people.
It says Memorial’s draft policy relies on narrow and exclusionary definitions of Indigeneity. The council insists that NunatuKavut Inuit are an Indigenous people. They are also a Treaty people, having entered into a Treaty with the British in 1765.
The Stand with NunatuKavut campaign aims to educate the public and encourage informed dialogue. NCC calls on the university to amend the draft policy to fully include them, and reflect the principles of inclusion, fairness, equity and respect.
