Two people have died from influenza in Newfoundland and Labrador so far this flu season, according to the department of health.
Many jurisdictions across the country, and the world, are experiencing higher numbers of influenza cases thanks to the H3N2 strain of the virus, and this province is no different.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, says about 100 cases of influenza were recorded during the most recent reporting period – up to the end of 2025.
She expects to see more cases of the flu in the province before the season starts to wind down.
She says they generally see a consistent rise in cases in January, then a peak later in the month. She says it will be a little while yet before they better understand what’s happening with this flu season.
