The capital city region’s new Urgent Care Clinic opens to patients today.
The clinic, located in the old Costco Building adjacent to the Ambulatory Clinic, is set up to handle issues like sprains, strains, the common cold, infections, broken bones and minor injuries requiring stitches.
The aim is to divert lesser medical issues away from emergency rooms.
Megan Carey says while intended for less serious issues, ambulances are available if a patient’s condition is too severe for the clinic.
The urgent care clinic, which opens this morning at 8:00, will be open daily until 8:00 p.m.

NLHS says the clinic will expand to 24-hour care as staffing allows.
How do you know where to go if you think you broke your hand, or if the belly pain you’re having is easily diagnosed and treated?
When the concept of an urgent care clinic was first introduced, then-Health Minister Tom Osborne indicated that a public information campaign would be launched to make it clear.
NL Health Services says it has posted information on its website and has also shared info on social media. Digital signs have also been established in health care facilities.

According to NLHS the types of injuries or ailments that can be seen at the Urgent Care Clinic include sprains, strains or minor breaks, skin infections, burns or cuts, respiratory illnesses with fever, cough or shortness of breath, stomach trouble including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, and urinary tract infections.
NLHS say urgent care requires same day care, while emergency care requires immediate attention. Those who feel they have a serious life-threatening medical problem should proceed to the nearest available emergency room.
