The closure of MUN’s Signal Hill Campus means the loss of housing accommodations set aside specifically for graduate students.
The facility is on the chopping block as MUN tries to find savings in the face of a $25-million shortfall.
The campus will continue operating as-is for now, but will close in April 2027 if it is not sold or transferred.
The facility includes condo-like rooms for graduate living.
President Janet Morrison says there are 87 of those rooms in the building, and while occupancy is “high,” it is not full.
Morrison says the university is committed to supporting those students, noting there is space available on the St. John’s campus, as well as off-campus options.
She says some students have reported challenges about living at the site- including transportation, and now the pending closure of the nearby Quidi Vidi Lake Dominion.
Morrison says the nature of graduate studies will help with the transition.
She says many of the students will be able to complete their credentials prior to the closure.
