The mayor of Long Harbour has heard from dozens of residents upset with the deplorable condition of the access road leading into their community.
Mayor Walter Keating says the pavement is broken up and a proliferation of potholes have been filled with sandbags, and are a safety concern.
He says he’s reached out to the provincial government, but to no avail.
Keating who’s already had two of his own tires and a rim busted up on the road, has heard from close to 30 people who have incurred similar damage.
Vale’s Long Harbour processing plant employs some 900 people who are coming and going every day and Keating calls it a serious safety issue when vehicles break down on the road.
“I watch (people) pull over and I stop and ask them if they’re okay, they’re waiting for a tow truck to come,” he told VOCM Open Line.
“With the big trucks and everything going to Vale, what happens is there’s only one layer of pavement there and that is disintegrated to like checker blocks, and to see these (people) in the middle of the night like broke down after hitting a hole waiting for a tow truck, like especially this time of year, it’s terrible.”
