The State of Emergency has been lifted in Trepassey after Monday’s storm flattened what was left of the breakwater.
Debris across the road effectively cut off a portion of the town, but contractors have since made the appropriate repairs and clean up.
While the road remains closed for public use, area residents can get back and forth.
Mayor Wanda Waddleton says right now the area is unprotected.
She calls it a no-win situation. While the walls are down, beach rocks have been piled up as a make-shift barrier, but “if we get any weather at all, that’s going to cover the road again.”
In the meantime, work began last month on a new armourstone breakwater. She’s been told that the new breakwater will start to be constructed on-site next month, but whether it stands up to increasingly powerful storms, remains to be seen.
“The winds and the waves are after getting so rough now, and so different over the years. We’re hoping it’s going to be the answer, but…it’s trial and error I think.”
