Officials with the provincial department of forestry will be conducting caribou surveys in parts of the island in the coming weeks.
The surveys will involve the use of low-flying aircraft over the southeast Avalon – with a focus on the Avalon Wilderness Reserve and the Cape Shore – as well as the Burin Peninsula and the Gander region.
Some caribou will be marked with temporary red, orange or blue paint as part of the work. Government assures the paint does not impact the animals, and will be shed with their winter coats.
