The provincial government says the Canada Summer Games were a resounding success – to the point where it would not hesitate to post a bid for a future national games.
Newfoundland and Labrador has hosted two national sport showcases over the years – two summer events in the capital region and a winter one in the Corner Brook region.
An Economic Impact Assessment of the games has been released by Sport Tourism Canada.
According to the report, more than $40-million was spent by visitors in the province, including $15.4-million in accommodations, $8.3-million in restaurant and food services, and nearly $4-million in retail shopping.
As well, 642 local jobs were supported – amounting to $56.8-million in wages and salaries.
The minister responsible for sport and tourism, Andrea Barbour, says the infrastructure will benefit generations of athletes.
She says the games will be a legacy for St. John’s and the province, strengthening opportunities for athletes and communities.
