The province’s Serious Incident Response Team has dismissed any notion of wrongdoing by two RCMP officers in the shooting of a man following a series of incidents last summer which culminated in a car accident near Arnold’s Cove.
The RNC and RCMP took several calls from the public about suspected impaired driving, the theft of gas, and potential suicidal utterances.
The officers tried to detain the man in Arnold’s Cove under the Mental Health Act after a collision August 14th, but he brandished a gun at the officers, prompting them to discharge their firearms, resulting in him being seriously injured.
The firearm turned out to be an unloaded BB gun, intending to provoke a lethal response as a form of suicide by cop according to the Serious Incident Response Team.
The man later apologized to authorities for his actions.
SIRT-NL has ruled that the officers reasonably believed they were in danger of serious bodily harm or death, and tried to negotiate with the person to lower his gun. SIRT says the police acted in self-defense.
