The Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philips has declared a State of Emergency and is evacuating people near a stubborn blaze at the Landings Eatery and Pub near the ferry terminal.
The fire broke out at around 7:00 a.m., forcing the approaching Bell Island ferry to turn back to the island.
Fire Chief Fred Hollett says they are going door-to-door telling people to leave because of concern about debris shooting up in the air and smoke in the area.
The evacuation applies to Harding’s Hill from the Memorial to the ferry dock, Boulder Lane, Bridgett’s Road and Somerton’s Lane.
Evacuees are collecting at the recreation centre on Rainbow Gully Road in St. Phillip’s and are being encouraged to register.
Nearby homes in no immediate danger from the flames
He is hoping that the fire will die down later today. There are still many fire trucks in the area and a lot of thick, black smoke spewing from the restaurant.
Hollett says there is no immediate danger of fire spreading to nearby homes.
“No, not homes above it; there is another structure only a few feet from the restaurant but we have a protection line flowing there,” said the fire chief.
The ferries are still tied up, but emergency situations will be accommodated.
