A 36-year-old man is facing numerous firearms charges after he was pulled over near Witless Bay on the weekend.
Ferryland RCMP pulled over a vehicle with a damaged licence plate on Saturday afternoon at the intersection of the Southern Shore Highway and the Witless Bay Line.
Police noticed a quantity of unstamped tobacco in the vehicle, and the driver and his passenger were arrested without incident. Officers also seized two rifles, an imitation firearm and ammunition.
RCMP say the driver, 36-year-old Darron Rumbolt of Mary’s Harbour, gave officers a false name and could not produce a valid licence for the firearms which were not being safely transported.
The charges against him include:
- Careless use of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
- Resisting or obstructing a peace officer
- Failure to comply with a condition of a release order
The passenger was released without charge. The vehicle was seized.
Police say further charges are possible.
