The NDP is calling on government to release an all-party committee report focused on affordability.
The report, completed ahead of the provincial election, made several recommendations on addressing affordability and the challenges faced by low-income people.
Finance Minister Craig Pardy says he could release the report, but it may be moot because some recommendations would not gain traction, such as calling for a guaranteed basic income from the federal government. PEI tried it a couple of years ago only to be rejected by Ottawa.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn says releasing the report and implementing the recommendations would save government money in the long run.
“I think you’ll find that it’s pretty positive overall towards guaranteed basic income,” he told reporters.
“It has the ability, I think, to save the money in the long run in terms of health costs and so forth. It addresses the social determinants of health. It was recommended in the Health Accord.”
The PC’s would not say when they would release the report.
