A new initiative to help keep men active, engaged and socialized after retirement is coming to Newfoundland and Labrador in conjunction with Senior’s NL and the Lonely Man Project.
Men’s Sheds Canada was developed to bring men together to help them develop new skills, discover new interests and make new friends beyond their 9 to 5 working life.
Outreach and Member Services Coordinator with Men’s Sheds Canada, Brian Sawyer, says his experience is similar to that of other men. He looked forward to retirement, but after a few months, got bored and longed for a sense of purpose.
He found out about Men’s Sheds and joined one.
He says a group of men with a range of interests started getting together once a week, and became good friends. “And you know what happens when guys get together; sooner or later they want to do something productive. Like, ‘let’s give back to the community.’ Many of us are retired now, ‘let’s do something, let’s build some benches for a half-way house, or let’s go fix up some shelves at the food bank.'”
