Provincial justice minister Helen Conway-Ottenheimer recently met with her federal counterpart Sean Fraser and she believes they laid a “very strong foundation” for the work that needs to be done.
Conway-Ottenheimer, who describes the meeting in St. John’s last week as being “introductory” in nature, says they discussed many “general concepts” around their shared priority of making communities safer.
Included in that was looking at various pieces of federal legislation and policies that are making their way through the system. Conway-Ottenheimer also highlights work that needs to be done around recruitment of law enforcement personnel.
She says both sides agreed that getting more police officers on the ground is a “very important objective.”
