Debate ramped up once again in the House of Assembly over the NL Housing Corporation file – after yet another scathing report from the Auditor General.
The PC’s put the blame squarely on the Liberals, while the previous administration says it needed more time to fix the file, and it’s the PC who are now responsible.
The PC’s say the public housing file sat on the corner of a desk in Confederation Building, with little to no direction from the Liberals.
Former Premier and Liberal Leader John Hogan disagrees.
“We have a couple of former housing ministers who did a lot of good work over the last few years. Some of the work that we did over the last number of years, like last year’s budget, we put almost $100 million into housing solutions,” Hogan told reporters.
The minister responsible for the file, Joedy Wall, says now is the time for the Liberals to support the PC’s in advancing the file.
“The former Liberal administration dropped the ball. The housing corporation was not supported and was not given the proper guidance,” he stated.
The report from the AG cited a growing waitlist for public housing under the Liberal administration and a mismatch in units
NDP Leader Jim Dinn says the Liberals weren’t focused on rebuilding the housing stock or working to get people out of homeless shelters.
“And it was a clear policy decision not to support non-market, community-based housing or affordable housing of any kind. It was solely a focus on, I would say, the private market and maybe benefiting their friends.”
