The Justice Minister says the fact that up to two dozen inmates are currently being housed in the gymnasium at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary is of great concern, and she’s discussing the matter with NAPE which represents corrections officers.
Overcrowding has long been a concern at the aging and outdated facility, worsened by the rising number of incarcerations.
A new corrections facility is under construction, but is not expected to be completed until the fall of 2029.

“We’re exploring all alternative options and solutions to try to address these issues at HMP” says Conway Ottenheimer. She describes the conversations with NAPE as “very positive.”
