The Prime Minister says Ottawa is looking at ways to help “cushion the blow” of rising fuel prices.
Mark Carney was asked about what the federal government intends to do as the price of oil continues to rise due to the situation in the Middle East – affecting everything from travel to the cost of groceries and everyday items.
The Prime Minister was non-committal, but did indicate it’s something government is looking at.
“So the question becomes, and this is what the government is focused on, is how long is this going to persist? And what can we do to help cushion the blow for Canadians, and that’s something we’re looking at.”
Cut gas tax says taxpayers organization
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has a suggestion.
CTF Federal Director Franco Terrazzano says the simplest and easiest way to help Canadians is to stop charging high gas prices.
He says federal gas taxes cost Canadians about 26 cents per litre, while provincial governments also impose fuel taxes.
Terrazzano says countries like Australia, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal have already cut gas taxes to provide citizens with relief.
