The Prime Minister is introducing federal funding of $5 billion over the next three years that will be dedicated to health infrastructure.
The money will be used to help prioritize upgrades to “critical health infrastructure” including hospitals, urgent care centres and facilities for palliative care, mental health care, and long-term care.
The Prime Minister made the announcement in Brampton, Ontario yesterday as part of a larger focus on infrastructure spending.
“This is a new priority for the federal government” says Carney, “because in many communities, hospitals were built in the 1970s, and they’re now serving populations that are twice as big as they were designed for. Families are waiting too long for the care they deserve.”
He says Ottawa is “deploying $5 billion through a health infrastructure fund to build more emergency departments, and new urgent care centres.” He says that will also include long term care, palliative care and mental health care.
The provincial government has already indicated that it plans to revitalize St. Clare’s Hospital after putting the brakes on the previous government’s plans to build a new hospital complex at Kenmount Crossing.
