Construction of a new roundabout on the route to St. John’s International Airport begins next week.
It will involve complete reconfiguration of the high-collision intersection on Portugal Cove Road, at Airport Heights Drive and Major’s Path.
Work is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, April 13, and continues until the end of the year.
The city says it will do all it can to reduce delays and keep traffic flowing. That includes keeping at least one lane of traffic open in each direction at all times on Portugal Cove Road.
As for Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive, one lane will remain open in each direction during peak traffic hours – 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. Outside those hours, traffic may be reduced to one shared lane for both directions.
Area councilor Jill Bruce says it’s the epitome of short-term pain for long-term gain.
“As I’ve been doing for the past two years, just asking for the residents’ patience and consideration with this one,” she said. “It’s going to be a major project, it’s going to cause a lot of delays, we’re not going to sugarcoat it. But it will be the last major construction project in this area for the foreseeable future.”
Full details on the project, including maps to inform drivers ahead of time, are available on the City of St. John’s Engage page.
