The NDP is expected to introduce a private member’s resolution in the House of Assembly this week seeking changes to the Public Utilities Act to ensure that ratepayers are not carrying the burden when executives at Newfoundland Power see a salary increase.
The NDP argues that residential consumers in Newfoundland have seen their rates rise by nearly 25 per cent since 2021, yet the utility is reporting record profits and executives are getting paid large bonuses.
The party is basing its resolution on similar changes made in Nova Scotia back in 2012.
A recent allNewfoundlandLabrador report indicated that Newfoundland Power’s three executives saw a 3 to 4 per cent increase in their base salaries last year, not including bonuses.
The NDP says it’s seeking an amendment that would ensure that executive salary increases are not achieved on the backs of consumers.
