The MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi is ready to table a petition before the House of Assembly calling on the provincial government to intervene and have Limeville on Signal Hill declared a provincial historic site.
Sheilagh O’Leary was remarking on the fight to preserve the old Alderdice property on Signal Hill.
More than 100 area residents and supporters held a rally on the weekend urging that action be take to save the property and surrounding land from development.
The property was sold to a developer who wants to convert the space into a condo development overlooking St. Johns’ Harbour.
Residents say that would not fit in with the surrounding neighbourhood and want the property’s unique characteristics, including the land surrounding the historic home, preserved.
O’Leary, who served for years on St. John’s city council told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan that the city is losing heritage structures at an accelerated pace and action must be taken.
She says losing the property will have “incredibly negative impacts on the tourism industry.”
