Memorial University’s Board of Regents has instructed president Janet Morrison to review the faculty and school structure.
In a statement published in the MUN Gazette, Morrison says the university is facing “significant and sustained enrolment and financial pressures,” and that the aim of the review is to reduce administrative complexity and costs “while strengthening academic quality, research intensity and student experience.”
Morrison says Memorial must plan for provincial and federal forecasts that predict a 12 per cent decrease in undergraduate and graduate enrollment by 2030 – on top of the decreases already seen.
MUN stresses that the review will focus on organizational structure, and not academic programs or course offerings.
To that end, MUN says it currently has 18 faculties and schools, while those numbers at other comparable institutions range from five to 15.
As part of the process, a working group will be established. Their report will be delivered to the Senate and Board this fall, with final board consideration due early next year.
