St. John’s city council has voted unanimously to tear down an eyesore at 206 Mundy Pond Road.
The house was the source of repeated public complaints even before a fire occurred there in March causing extensive damage.
The structure was rendered uninhabitable, and subsequent inspections confirmed that the condition of the building poses potential health and safety risks to the general public.

The city says the registered owner of the home is dead, and the property forms part of an estate, however, the home has been occupied by a family member.
The city says Inspection Services has been dealing with the property for an extended period with numerous notices issued, but not addressed. That process is now working through the courts, with a trial scheduled for September 18th.
A formal notice was issued to both the estate and the occupant requiring demolition of the home, with no action taken.
Ward Councillor Greg Noseworthy says the property poses a serious safety concern.
“This is the last step we want to take” he told council yesterday, “but it is a necessary step, and one that I request that everyone around the table support.”
