Tonight marks the end of an era in television talk shows as Stephen Colbert signs off for the last time as the host of The Late Show.
Colbert has been the host of the program for more than a decade.
The cancellation of the program comes as the result of cost-cutting by broadcast host CBS, as well as his long-standing criticism of US President Donald Trump.
A St. John’s comic and actor makes no bones about why he thinks the show is being taken off the air. He believes that Colbert “got on the President’s bad side and he had him taken off the air.”
John Sheehan defends the right of comedians to be critical of the world around them – including politicians.
“I think its always been a comedian’s job to speak truth to power,” says Sheehan, who notes that while he doesn’t talk about politics or religion on stage, he is vocal on social media and believes that people should speak up.
Sheehan says he will be tuning in for the final broadcast.
“I’m not going to miss that,” says Sheehan, who emphasizes the importance of this night in the context of the show’s 33-year run.
